BIOgraphy
Oscar Dempsey is a multidisciplinary artist, designer and scenographer with over 15 years of experience working across performance, film, and visual art. Based in Helsinki, they create spatial environments, handcrafted objects and installations, combining conceptual development with hands-on design and fabrication. Their work has been presented across Europe and North America through exhibitions, festivals, film productions and international cultural events. Dempsey regularly collaborates with performers, artists, designers and institutions to develop visual concepts and transform them into practical, technically realised environments and objects.
PRACTICE
Dempsey’s practice spans sculpture, scenography and craft, with a focus on hands-on making and the transformation of materials, objects and spaces. Working through experimental and sustainable processes, they create tactile objects and immersive environments that shift familiar forms into strange, bodily and playful artefacts.
Transformation is central to the work, where objects and spaces are altered to explore ideas of queerness, discomfort and desire, while also questioning how design and decoration communicate cultural and social values. Moving between the visual and the theatrical, the static and the animated, Dempsey uses making as a way to reimagine how we experience objects and spaces, both public and private.
